We are more than a farm we are a Nature Experience

Lots Happening at PPI !

This year we:

  • Hired our first employee, a part time Farmhand
  • More than doubled the income of vegetables grown and doubled the weight (2021 income $3,384    pounds 843#,   2022 income $7,934 and 1915#)
  • Since 2013, PPI has held 72 classes and workshops, with 17 different instructors from 3 counties (Park, Gallatin, Jefferson)
  • Held our 8th annual Seed Saving Event and Seed Exchange
  • Created two dedicated strawberry beds to grow a sizable crop
  • Trellised the sitting area in front of the Washing Station for growing more grapes and providing summer shade.
  • Perma-chinked the outside walls of the cordwood toolshed
  • Hired Miles to dig the hole for the cement chambers for the cordwood composting dry toilet. Yeah, we can begin construction for it next year!
  • Held a successful Walking Tour of our demonstration site with plant-based snacks from the site
  • In the beginning stages of partnering with a local permaculturist, Ben, to work with our board mapping/planning to move water across the property to prep for a swaled Regenerative Agriculture 1-2 acre growing plot
  • PPI just invested in a furrow maker from Moody Implement to assist in swale making.
  • Working on a Website Update

 

August 2022 – Garlic ready to harvest at PPI…

Hardneck garlic is ready when the garlic scapes are standing straight and when the bottom leaves turn brown. The scape on the hardneck is first a curly cue then will go straight. We clip the scapes as curly cues to eat and leave one in the bunch, to know when it is ready to harvest. This way the plant doesn’t have to put energy into producing seed at the end of the scape just making bigger bulbs. *Softneck garlic is harvested when the bottom leaves are brown.

The garlic grown in the tractor tires is much larger and it is easier to enrich the soil in a contained area. These cloves plus the largest from the pasture garden will be planted this October for next year’s harvest.
